Character Information Name: Shelby Corcoran Age: 36 (based on her having Rachel at 20, age can vary if need be) Fandom: Glee Class Taught: Music Housing: One bedroom Point In Fandom Taken From: The end of season 1, after she adopted Beth. Brief History:
Shelby was raised by two overachieving, musically inclined parents. The good side of this was that she got from them, a singing voice and the training to perfect it. The bad side was that when it came to music, she didn't get much attention from them. Because of this, she was determined to make something of her musically. She performed in school choirs and talent shows--singing, piano and dancing--because she knew that she would get attention from her parents, even if it was only for the performance at the time.
Some children might grow to resent music given that situation, and for a while, she did. But music quickly became her life. She could be happy when singing, she could be in her own little world where anything could be how she wanted it. She could really thrive. But she wanted more. She wanted to make it big. She wanted to get out of Ohio and make it on Broadway.
When she was 20, she got the chance. She found an ad requesting a surrogate mother for two gay men. The money compensation would give her enough to go to New York after having the baby and giving it up. She would lose nothing except nine months of her life and her figure--something she could get back after the fact. It was the perfect plan.
After giving the baby--a girl--up to the dads, Shelby realized that it wasn't that simple. She had a little girl but she couldn't keep her. It was then that she realized that having a baby was something she wanted, even more than making it in New York. Because of this, she decided to stay in Ohio so that when her daughter turned 18, she could search for her--the agreement had been that she couldn't contact her until then.
In the meantime, she married and tried to conceive a child, but it wasn't long before she discovered that she couldn't have any more children. The depression from that news sent her back into her music. She went to school for music and graduated with a teaching degree. She started out at a local elementary school, but it didn't make her happy.
That was when she entered the world of teaching competitive show choir. She got a job at Carmel High School as their choir director. At the time, the choir wasn't much of anything. They had talent, but they didn't have the drive to win. Shelby devoted her time and attention to the choir, neglecting her husband in the process. As the choir--now named Vocal Adrenaline--improved, she barely noticed her husband leaving her. She was aware of what was going on, but she didn't feel anything, except for pride for her choir.
The choir eventually became well-known. They won several national competitions and they had become the team to beat in the small Ohio town. It became her life--until she made a discovery.
Rumors started of a team that might be a challenge to Vocal Adrenaline. One, that line her own team had once been, was barely on the map. She attended their Sectionals performance and made two discoveries--one was that Vocal Adrenaline had a real adversary. They were rough, but they had the potential to shape up and beat them. Shelby couldn't be too careful. The other was that their star performer was her daughter. A plan had to be put into action.
As Rachel was only 16, Shelby knew that she couldn't approach the girl, but if she could get the girl to come to her, the agreement was null and void. She sent her best student--Jesse St. James--to win the girl's trust and get Rachel to listen to a tape of her singing. Once that was accomplished, Jesse could come back to Vocal Adrenaline.
Shelby got her wish. Rachel came to her and she got to finally meet her daughter, but it wasn't what she had hoped for. It wasn't that she was disappointed in the person she had become. Actually, she was quite proud. Rachel reminded her of herself in so many ways. But she had wanted a baby girl. Rachel already had parents, she was already raised. She didn't need Shelby.
She took her team to Regionals with the promise that she was done teaching show choir. She wanted nothing more than her team to give her one last win--and they did. But that night, she also got one other wish. Rachel's classmate had a baby. Since the parents were so young, they didn't plan on keeping her. She went to the hospital and spoke to the parents. She got nothing out of them, but the father's request to name her Beth.
The next day, she returned to the hospital to adopt the baby girl. When told that the baby had not been given a name, Shelby told them that her name would be Beth.
